The foundry
I established Quainton Type to give my type design practice a dedicated home: a space where I could develop, publish and support original typefaces independently, beyond the requirements and timescales of commissioned projects.
Every release is developed with close attention to drawing, proportion, spacing and language support. My aim is to create typefaces that work confidently across print and digital environments: practical enough for everyday use, but with enough character to establish a recognisable voice.
Chesham Sans is the foundry's first release and establishes the foundations of this approach. I intend to grow the Quainton Type library deliberately, with an emphasis on considered ideas, careful production and typefaces made for lasting use.
About me
I'm Jonathan Quainton, a British designer and typeface designer with a practice rooted in typography, image-making and visual identity.
I'm also a co-founder of Sawdust, the London-based creative partnership I established with Rob Gonzalez. Through Sawdust, I have created bespoke typography, display typefaces, editorial imagery and identity work for international clients and publications.
Type design has been a consistent part of my work throughout my career. Quainton Type builds on that experience but has a different role: Sawdust is a collaborative studio centred on commissioned creative work, while Quainton Type is my independent platform for developing, publishing and supporting retail typefaces.
I am also available for selected custom type projects, including bespoke typefaces, lettering systems and adaptations of Quainton Type releases for specific brand or editorial use.
